About the artist

Senegambia, a remarkable multimedia artist from Rio de Janeiro who has been gaining significant recognition across Brazil. We are proud to present their extraordinary prints to the international market, featuring a captivating series focused on the Orishas (Òrìṣà in Yoruba) - the revered deities of Afro-Brazilian religions.

These sacred traditions arrived in Brazil through millions of enslaved Africans between the 16th and late 19th centuries. Today, Afro-Brazilian religions serve as vital custodians of diverse African cultural heritage, encompassing traditions, rituals, and ancestral knowledge. These practices have evolved to incorporate indigenous and European elements (like matching each orisha to a Catholic deity so the forbidden religion could be practiced within Catholic churches without trouble) , creating a uniquely Brazilian cultural expression.

Senegambia's digital collages offer viewers an infinite realm of meanings, possibilities and futurities, deeply rooted in his Afro-Atlantic heritage (with a father from Senegal and a mother from Rio de Janeiro). Each artwork employs the distinctive colours, symbols, artifacts and imagery associated with specific Orishas to communicate their stories, strengths, and complexities.

In a fascinating artistic interpretation, Senegambia transforms influential figures from Black decolonial discourse such as Nina Simone, Thomas Sankara, Bob Marley, Lélia Gonzalez, and Marcus Garvey into Orishas, matching their personalities with the characteristics of Afro-Brazilian deities.

Senegambia's work is guided by two Orishas: Ogum, master of technology and pathfinder, and Oxum, the embodiment of beauty. However, as the artist notes, their journey unfolds according to the rhythm and desire of Exú, the great communicator and divine messenger.
